One of the things that happens on things like friends reunited and latterly places like Facebook and Twitter is that you find yourself intimately connected to people who used to be very important in your life but who, in reality, you rarely see or speak to in current times.

On one hand I’m now finding out all about the LRP exploits of the kids of a girl I knew at university which is lovely.

But on another I found out yesterday via Facebook that the father of an ex of mine has suddenly unexpectedly passed away.

Social networks treat all human connections as equal and so when something like this happens you feel the same for someone who, long ago, was a great friend as you would for your current closest contacts.

My heart really goes out to her and her family but there’s no social convention of what to do in this situation.
