Ex American Secretary of State Colin Powell, now safely escape from the Neocon empire builders, has stated on Meet the Press that Iraq is now in a state of Civil War and the Guantamano Bay should be closed and those held in it moved to Amercian civilian jails. Some have even (rather wildly) said that he should consider standing on one of the Democratic party tickets (VP to Barak Obama perhaps). While he’s always been a pretty “centerist” guy (if you have to label people) but I don’t think he’s going to be someone to sit in two consecutive Cabinets for two different parties. Instead I think he’s smart enough to stay out of politics from now on – have to wait and see.

Another link to a paelo future poster. I had this one on the wall of my bedroom for at least 5 years when I was around 10 or so. I seriously don’t think kids have anything like this now. Sure, they have Doctor Who and other SF that discusses the distant future or fantasy but images of the realistic near future are left to adult disatopian novels and the like. Where are all the “In 50 years the world will be great because…”?

The worlds biggest biometric database was agreed upon recently when all 27 EU nations agreed to sign up to a system that will record amongst other things the DNA records, car records, photographs and fingerprints of all criminals – able to be accessed anywhere. Also 70M outstanding visa applicant. Of course once you’re on the system for any reason (false arrest for example) you’re never removed…

BAE (no sign of going away yet) : Browne refuses to say payments have stopped, Blaire wants us to blame him (so Browne can start “clean”), MoD accused of direct involvement.

Human rights law applies in Iraq killing, lords rule – I’m pretty sure there was something similar to this in The West Wing once. You have to apply the same ethics (from the American Constitution in TWW) everywhere. You can’t hold truths to be self evident to only some of the people…

This should be staggeringly hard to believe yet, unfortunately it is not – it just makes me feel physically sick. American soldiers have been ordered to give weapons, fuel, etc to Iraqi “insurgents” (ie terrorists) in exchange for promises that they will attack other Iraqis and not Americans.

The upcoming resurgence of folk music. Katie (of the no-LJ) is ahead of the game…

Another thing that makes me wish I had more time. I discovered that The Guardian is doing a weekly podcast on Islamic life – lots of very interesting things to learn about a group that makes up a hugely significant portion of the world.
