A Singaporan blogger has been sent to jail for posting racist hate-speech on in blog. While I obviously don’t condone what they are saying it makes little sense to be to try and hide this kind of thing when public explanation of why it is bad always works better in the long run.

However thinking on this leads me to wonder what, if any, speech should be banned from being broadcast? Incitement to kill, instructions to build WDMs, images of torture or obscene pornography viewed for pleasure? Naturally the internet being trans-national it is extremely hard to create a standard view of what should be allowable since it is all very subjective. Following on, the technology itself, which is designed to route around “damage” such as attempts to censor what is published, makes it very hard to enforce any such hypothetical bans – regardless of continued attempts by American senetors.
